Marietta was trained as a musician and dancer in Cuba. At 21, she came to the United States on the Mariel boatlift, longing for the freedom to travel the world. Over the years Marietta took groups to Cuba to explore the island’s folklore and musical traditions. Under the current travel restrictions, Marietta is prevented from organizing cultural exchanges with Cuban artists, or even regular contact with her 84-year-old father. Marietta says she came to the United States in pursuit of more freedom, not less.
